CNN’s coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has come under scrutiny recently, with critics accusing the network of being influenced by the Israeli government and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The network admitted that its news coverage about Israel and Palestine is reviewed by the CNN Jerusalem bureau, which is subject to IDF censorship. This means that foreign news outlets reporting on the region must go through the censor or report stories from outside Israel. CNN defended its policy, stating that it aims to ensure precise and accurate reporting due to the unique and complex nature of the situation. Critics argue that this censorship allows Israel to control the news narrative and intimidate media outlets. A CNN staff member confirmed that lines in Israel-Palestine reporting are edited under specific nuance, and certain words like “war-crime” and “genocide” are taboo. The network is also said to scrutinize information from Palestinian sources more heavily than information from Israeli officials. Despite concerns raised by critics, CNN maintains that it exercises minimal interaction with the IDF. The network recently expanded its review team to include editors outside of Israel to provide more expertise. CNN’s approach to reporting casualties and statistics from Hamas-controlled sources has also faced criticism.
